TSW: another crumb of info

The Secret World sure is a big seekrit these days, dammit. I’m trying not to drool for info or anything, but … /drool.

Anyway, the Universal Gaming Database (UGDB) just posted an interview with Ragnar Tornquist in which — to be brutal and blunt — not much that’s new is revealed, but it’s a crumb and I’ll take it as such.

I would be in a frothing frenzy about this game if there were enough to froth about; instead, I’m quietly frothing on the inside and waiting for a chance to explode into full, hype-fuelled, fangrrlish insanity. Those beta invites have to go out someday, right?

UGDB also have some screenies I hadn’t seen elsewhere before, like the one below. There is a definite Cthulhu-esque vibe going on in TSW — among all the other occult/freaky/make you lose SAN points squamous monsters just under the surface references, of course. Still, anything that references the Great Old Ones can’t be all bad.

  1. This secret world could in fact be a direct Lovecraftian theme. HPL posited an extradimensional world overlapping parallel to our own filled with tentacled horrors from which occasionally nightmarish monstrosities would come through “from the other side”.

Note that while HPL’s copyright expired at the end of 2007 in most countries they may still have to be careful for legal reasons. They were certainly working on the game while it was still copyright which may mean that the former IP holders could sue for a share of the profits if they blatantly said this is Cthulhu Now Online.

  2. PS: the legal situation is a bit more complicated than I thought, as explained in the copyright section here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovecraft

In any event Lovecraftian imagery is so prevalent in Video Games and Horror fiction that just using his tropes without mentioning Cthulhu should be perfectly safe.

If court cases were winnable every time someone used tentacled horrors you’d have to ditch half of pop culture!

Yeah, I’m eager to see how this plays out. I loves me some good gothic horror.

  4. I really hope they do pull this one off – Funcom have done good work in previous games for story & setting, but have struggled a bit on execution.

I’d love to fight to keep my SAN points, so one can hope at least.

I’m trying to keep my expectations low, though I’m looking forward to this one.
