Happy New Year!

What? Better 3.5 months late than never, right?

The MMORPG gig is winding down, largely because there’s not enough time in the day to do all the work I’m doing AND sleep / eat / get clean AND write a column. Actually, it’s probably more a question of head-space, but same end result. Because the folks there are total stars, however, I’ll be able to guest-spot if and when a game moves me enough to write about it.

Yeah… There’s the rub. I’m not sure whether I don’t have time for games or whether I just don’t have the same interest in games, which if the latter would kind of suck since I still think of myself as a gamer. I played SW:TOR for a month at release, dabbled for a further month, and stopped (though my sub is still active through this month, I think). We keep buying Xbox games I don’t end up having time to play. I never did get all that far in Skyrim in the end, and I’ve managed maybe the first 5 minutes of Red Dead Redemption (and promptly got killed in a duel I had no idea I’d accepted). Arkham Asylum is still sitting in its shiny wrapper (actually a plastic bag, since it’s a used copy). We bought a bunch of other used games in a spree at Game Spot and I couldn’t even tell you what they are.

I’ve re-downloaded Age of Conan (and wasn’tthat a bloody week-long saga on our crappy internet connection) but I haven’t even made it off the starting beach in a month. I’ve re-downloaded the various digital Sims games/packs I own, and I’ve not played them either. I downloaded Wurm online yesterday, but by the time it was done patching I was too tired to want to be eaten by a grue.

Even the impending arrival of The Secret World is eliciting little more than a tired “Yeah, yeah, meh” from me. I don’t think that’s permanent – I’m still really looking forward to that game, not to mention Guild Wars 2, but…

Okay, fine, I think I’ve been working too hard. I clawed a whole 2 days off for this weekend, but for the last 3 months of last year and the first 3 months of this one I’ve been at least a few hours (usually the standard 8-9) 7 days a week. A month ago I decided my sanity required at least one whole day where I could wake up and say “I’m not working today!”, and that’s helped, but now I’m working my way up to 2, at least some of the time.

Bright side: well, when you’re freelance, lots of work = lots more money. No, I’m not buying a Rolls anytime soon and no, I can’t afford to take off to Cabo every weekend (assuming I took weekends), but the business is growing and that’s a really good feeling. My standards are actually fairly low: screw Cabo, I just want to know I can pay my bills on time and deal with emergencies if and when they come up.

So anyway, I sort of want to play but I don’t really have the energy to do so. I figured I might finally check out Minecraft, in the hope that the demands of my schedule might protect me from being sucked down the addiction-hole… though from what I’ve heard others say, that’s kind of like saying “I can stop anytime I want!” I haven’t downloaded it yet anyway – with our connection out here, anything above 2 megabytes needs careful planning and scheduling. /rolleyes

Oh well. At least I was moved to post here again, which is actually rather nice. I wonder if anyone is left out there?

Yay, it’s an Ysharros! Happy to hear the business is going well, don’t work yourself into the ground. (Skyrim was a blank for me too, I still mean to play it but never got past the first town last time.)

Gah sorry it took me 10 days to see this languishing in the spam bucket! :(

Well, I’m glad to see that you’ve posted again.

I’m finding myself with a bit of game fatigue myself and tend to play a lot of Civ5 on the laptopl while watching tv with my wife anymore, rather than worry about sitting down for a multiple-hours-long MMO session. That said, I thinkg TSW looks quite interesting and have pre-ordered it, so we’ll see how that goes I suppose.

I think I kinda vaguely remember who you are. :>

Personally, I’m playing World of Tanks and Star Trek Online lately, as well as Mass Effect 3 multiplayer while trying to motivate myself to complete the single player storyline while afraid the recent explosion over the endings means I may not like them either. I’ve mostly managed to avoid finding out what people were upset over, though one unexpected spoiler left me with an uneasy feeling. I’m also expecting to spend a bit more time in LOTRO once the anniversary event starts.

Welcome back :) – if only just to say hello; hope you get more chances to have whole weekends off. Even to the point where one is not considering to work in the weekend, ideally.

Exactly. Part of the problem is that some of my projects pretty much require me to work weekends (Friday handout of weekly content updates for Monday delivery), and all my other projects run Mon-Fri… not much time left over for any 2 days off in a row. Eh well. It’s good money (when my invoices get paid :P).

I feel your pain. I think SWTOR may be my last great foray into MMO’s. I’m just not interested in GW2, and TSW has done nothing but disappoint me. And after that…what is there?

In any case, keep writing. I’d read thoughts on any subject. Don’t feel like you have to limit yourself to MMO’s (or even games)…

Heh, we’ll argue TSW when it comes out :D I’m hoping GW2 will differ from GW1 in enough ways to make it a genuine MMO, but we’ll see.

Thing is, even that’s on bad timing for me – the beta (assuming one gets in) kicks of May 11, and a few days later I’m off to France till the end of the month. Doubt I’ll be able to play TSW on a laptop, I’m not sure my dad would understand… and i know for sure I wouldn’t want to waste time with him on playing a game.

Eh, you know me, I’m just grousing. I’m sure I’ll be playing in both Beta’s when its all said and done and will probably buy one or both. My brother is already all in on TSW, so I will probably have to follow there at least…plus, you know, shotgun + sword + magic sounds so awesome, surely even Funcom can’t mess it up that badly. (-:

Also – have fun on your trip! I got to spend a week there when I was in high school, and I was pleasantly surprised that the rumors of in-hospitality were greatly exaggerated. (-: But then, my ancestors immigrated from Lyon, so maybe I’m biased.

Yeah.. your back. If your time conscious then Minecraft might not be the game for you. I’ve often started playing with the idea that I’ll only play for a small amount of time, but digging for minerals and building and clearing areas just starts to get away from me and the next thing you know its 3 hours later. However, that said, its a ton of fun for sure so you should try it.

I’m gonna be starting my poor little blog back up this week I think but I’m glad I wasn’t the only one taking a small break.

    Welcome back.

The nice thing about Minecraft is that it’s almost entirely based on your goals, not levels, quests or any of a dozen other grinds. You just play because you want to.

…so yeah, here’s hoping life is kind to you, Ysh!
