Age, and games

I didn’t start MMOs until 2000, and I only dabbled in MUDs and MUSHes before that, though I’ve been an avid (and no doubt geeky, if stylish) tabletop gamer for, uh, a long time. Even so, in the last not-quite-decade I have played more online games than I can easily remember.

And I’m being quite literal. It occurred to me to try and list all the games I’ve played — in order (I think), because that’s the only way I have any hope of remembering most (never mind all) of them. I’ll include betas, though I didn’t always go on to play the game at release, or if I did it wasn’t always for very long. As with many of us, while they all started on discrete dates, I’ve had an on-again/off-again relationship with several of the games below and have reactivated, deactivated, left in a huff, returned in contrition, and moved on more than once. Ironically enough one of the games I haven’t done that with is WoW, which is the one that seems to rubber-band a lot of people back.

Oh, and these are all pay to play as far as I can recall (except maybe Ryzom? I didn’t go past the 14-day trial). I’m not including Puzzle Pirates, Second Life, Guild Wars and other non-subscription games.

  • Asheron’s Call (Solclaim)
  • Ultima Online
  • EverQuest
  • Asheron’s Call 2
  • Dark Age of Camelot
  • Horizons
  • Star Wars Galaxies (Kauri / Shadowfire / TCPrime)
  • World of Warcraft (Icedown)
  • EverQuest 2 (Lucan)
  • EVE online
  • Ryzom
  • Shadowbane
  • Pirates of the Burning Sea
  • Vanguard (…. pre-Seradon, Test)
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • Warhammer Online (Averheim, nominally Monolith)

I’m shocked that I can remember less than half the server names I played on. My memory sucks, shame on me!

I also have the nagging feeling I’ve missed a few, and I can’t shake the names loose right now. Anyone care to delve into their own MMOemory, see what you’ve played?

  6. Apologies for the comment holdup. I’m not sure what’s going on, if anything.

A Tale in the Desert! Another forgotten one.
    DDO! Ditto.

I need to stock up on brain food.

  7. What would the list look like with Puzzle Pirates, SL, GW and other non-sub games? I’m weird, in that I”ve spent more time with PP and Atlantica Online than I ever spent with World of Warcraft. I detest the sub model, so my MMO experience is a bit different than the “typical” MMO player.

  9. I’m glad y’all went first, or I’d never have remembered some of mine.

    PLAYED
    Everquest, with pre-Luclin expansions
    Asheron’s Call 2
    Shadowbane
    Star Wars: Galaxies, pre-NGE
    Horizons
    City of Heroes, and Villains
    Everquest 2
    World of Warcraft
Mourning (a scam, not a game)

    TRIAL OR BETA
    Auto Assualt
    Wish
    EVE Online
    D&D Online
    Vanguard
    Tabula Rasa
    Lord of the Rings Online
    Warhammer Online
    Pirates of the Burning Sea
    Lineage 2

I never played a MUD. Everquest was my entry into MMOs, and SW:G (my favorite MMO) was my entry into forums (games are more fun without them).
